For System 7.0 - 7.6

In recent versions of the Finder, there are quite a few hidden features. Finder Options, which is a freeware Control Panel, enables those features. You need at least System 7 Pro (SSW 7.1.1), preferably System 7.5, and System 7.5.3 is recommended. Finder Options works fully under System 7.5.5, too.

Finder Options also allows you to control certain other things about the Finder. You need System 7.5 for this. All this is done without any trap patches, so Finder Options will not slow your Mac down.

What features are revealed in the Finder by Finder Options?

Control-Drag to Make Aliases (Requires System 7 Pro) - If this is selected, you can control-drag icons in the Finder to make aliases, just as you would drag to move or option-drag to copy.

Reveal Original Item in File Menu (Requires System 7.5) - If this is selected, a Reveal Original item appears in the Finder's File menu. It does the same thing for aliases as the Reveal Original button in the Get Info box, but it's easier to use.

Command-Delete Moves to Trash (Requires System 7.5.3) - If this is selected, you can press Command-Delete to move the selected icons in the Finder to the trash.

What options can be set by Finder Options?

Disable Zoom Rects (Requires System 7.5) - I don't know why any sane person would want to do this, but you can check this to disable the Finder's zoom rectangles. It could speed the Finder up a little.

No Translucent Dragging (Requires System 7.5.3 and PowerPC) - Again, I don't know why anyone would do this, but you can disable the new PowerPC translucent Finder dragging that's used in System 7.5.3.

Excerpt: Enclosed "Finder Options dox" (ReadMe text).

Architecture: 68k

68k encoded. Works fine on both 68k and PPC Macintosh

Requires a minimum of Mac SSW 7.1.1 (System 7 Pro) for any of the above features to be available.

If you have Mac OS 8.0 or newer, you do not need this Control Panel, as all of these features are available to the Mac OS since then.

Oops, I forgot that last one! Shock But admittedly, turning off translucent dragging is not really one of my used options, lol.

differences between this and Hidden Finder Features?

One additional checkbox option, by the looks of it Wink

These CP's only free up the hidden Finder features that are present in a Finder version but not enabled. With the 7.1.1 Pro Finder only "Option + Drag" to create aliases was available but not enabled. By the time 7.5 was released "Reveal Original Item in File Menu" was also available in the Finder, but not enabled. And with 7.5.3 all of those options available with using this CP, were in the Finder.

So, if you were running 7.1.1 only "Option + Drag" to create aliases would be working if you were to install this CP on that OS, as that was the only hidden feature in the Finder at that time (required Finder v7.1.3).

It's possible that the "Hidden Finder Features" CP on the other page could also be used in 7.1.1 to enable that feature, just It's documentation is not as comprehensive as Finder Options.

By accident (see "Finder Info" in screenshot #2 above), I discovered that newer Finder's could replace the 7.1.1 Finder with a Finder from 7.5 through to 7.5.3 and then all of these hidden features became available to the 7.1.1 Pro OS. This was after a LaserWriter Pro software update which installed a newer Finder (v7.5.1) over the existing Finder.

I remember using both, but besides a shorter name and slightly bigger size and window, finder options allows the first two options to be selected for systems before System 7.5.2 (the notes say that hidden finder features requires 7.5.3 and above), so that may also make this control panel compatible with Macs running older OSes from System 7.1.1 (Sys 7 Pro) up to System 7.5.1.
