GNU Emacs is an extensible, customizable text editor—and more. At its core is an interpreter for Emacs Lisp, a dialect of the Lisp programming language with extensions to support text editing. The features of GNU Emacs include:

* Content-sensitive editing modes, including syntax coloring, for a variety of file types including plain text, source code, and HTML.
* Complete built-in documentation, including a tutorial for new users.
* Full Unicode support for nearly all human languages and their scripts.
* Highly customizable, using Emacs Lisp code or a graphical interface.
* A large number of extensions that add other functionality, including a project planner, mail and news reader, debugger interface, calendar, and more. Many of these extensions are distributed with GNU Emacs; others are available separately.

The Macintosh port, version 1.17, includes support for working with CodeWarrior, THINK C, and Textures.

I have added Emacs 1.1.7 from MacsRUS' archive.

I recently tried on an LC with 10MB under 7.5.5. ~90 minutes to decompress. When run, a window pops up warning about the emacs system extension not being installed. Dismissed that notice, installed the extension and rebooted.

Running again I get a notice that tells you it is setting up the environment and will automatically exit after and you should restart it then. But when you restart it, it goes through it again, the same every time. Right before it exits a message is printed to the window but it goes away too fast to read. No logs or core files left.

Possibly a memory issue, though I have 8mb free when I run it and I can't imagine a program from 1992 using that much. It possibly doesn't like 32-bit addressing. Maybe 7.5.5 is too new, too, since this binary has been around for ages.

I could not get this to run under Mac OS 8.5.1. I am unsure if this has anything to do with how it loads into memory, as it sounds like it must load within the lower 32 MB if the machine has more than 32 MB RAM. Since my OS was using a little more than 30 MB, I'm not sure if it had enough space. Anybody have any answers or successful use of this version of Emacs for Macintosh?

You know what that name *really* stands for? "EMACS Makes Any Computer Slow". Even TECO on a PDP10 could run circles about Emacs on a threaded quad-core machine!
