Dabbler 2.0 (by Fractal Design) was released as a lighter version of the professional art program "Painter", and later re-branded as "Art Dabbler" (after Fractal Design had merged with MetaCreations). Dabbler was aimed at the non-professional "home market" but it had enough features and tools, to make it attractive to a wider audience.

Thank you for adding the CD image to the archive, mrdav. Very nice to see it here.

Edit - Perhaps the top two archives are no longer necessary. The CD image has it all and then some. Plus it's the original install set.

it now transpires that Dabbler (PPC) will work on SheepShaver anyway!

I'd gone by what you had written earlier and went straight for the 68k install without bothering to check the PPC side.

Its good to know the native PPC side works too, after all. Smile

Aaaah! right ... I stand corrected!

I've re-worked the write up.

Thanks for the re-pack also. I thought it best to stick with MacRUS' file - in case I introduced some incompatibilities of my own.

Re: Install 68k vers. in SheepShaver.
-------------------------------
No, I didn't think of that - 68k emulation _within_ the PPC emulation.
I tend to go .... Think SheepShaver -> Think PPC ... only. - Thanks for the tip.

I'll go back and have another look at Mathcad 6 now
- that's what I _really_ want to get going on SheepShaver - for the speed boost that Basilisk or classic mode can't match.
----
All that being said however it now transpires that Dabbler (PPC) will work on SheepShaver anyway! - Don't know what's changed - maybe I inadvertently had it on the unix drive - maybe a reboot "settled it in".

I've got so much stuff floating about - due to all this "recent activity" - don't really know what's what.

Fractal Design created and sold Painter as far back a 1990 (there's a 1992 version 1.2 of Painter here at the MG). Dabbler was produced later, as a cut down version of Painter in a similar vein to how Adobe's PhotoDeluxe was a cut down version of Photoshop. Both Fractal Design's Painter & Dabbler were acquired by Metacreations before Corel acquired the rights.

With regards to running this on Sheepshaver, a clue is that it runs on Basilisk II.

That is, there are several native PPC Mac programs that cannot run on Sheepshaver because Sheepshaver doesn't emulate an MMU. Its often graphics related programs that come up against this brick wall.

The workaround is to install the 68k version of the program, if one exits. In this case, the Dabbler 2 installer offers the option of installing a 68k, PPC or Universal (FAT) copy of the program. Opt for the 68k only, install. Its not native PPC, but its perhaps the only option for getting this to work OK on Sheepshaver.

The 68k version of Dabbler works fine on Sheepshaver, BTW.

If you can get this working on your SheepShaver installation - please let us know.
