Décor allows you to replace the desktop pattern with a background picture of your choice. You can have it display a file, or pick one from a folder. Décor recognizes StartupScreen, PICT, GIF and JPEG files. All changes to its settings take effect without needing to restart the computer. Décor reacts correctly to screen depth or screen resolution changes. It can change the picture automatically every once in a while. It has support for dragging and scripting. It is accelerated for PowerPC Macs and it even comes with a control strip module for faster access!

The downloads above are for language specific versions, beginning from the top down:

These are the original shareware versions (3.0.4), still carrying registration instructions. The author, François Pottier says that this software is now freeware & you can ignore those instructions.
All four are presently still available from the author's web page.

For 68000 and 68020 Macs, use Backdrop.

"Décor works fine under MacOS 7, 8 and 9. (Under 8.0 and 8.1, you must disable the Desktop Pictures control panel. Under 8.5.x, you need to press "Remove Picture", then "Set Desktop" in the Appearance control panel.)

If you use Kaleidoscope, you will need to turn off its "Desktop Pattern" option, otherwise Décor will not be able to work."

Tested under OS 9.2.2 on an iMac G3 - works fine.

Comments from the authors site: "The last version of Décor is 3.0.4. It is available in four languages: English, French, German, and Japanese. Each file weighs approximately 700K. These are the original versions, still carrying shareware registration instructions. You can now ignore them."

I use this on my PowerBook 540c with SSW 7.1.1 to do things that are normally not possible until later versions of the Mac OS.

Edit: Replaced 'xxx 7' with 'SSW 7' - IIGS User
