Guides on emulating older applications

Virtual PC is PC emulation software that provides users with the ability to run various Windows operating systems and software at reduced speed, right on their Macintosh, including DOS, Windows 3.1, 95, ME, and 2000.

Slower PowerPC systems will want to stick with DOS or Windows 3.1. Faster PowerPC systems will perform acceptably with Windows 95 and 98. G3 and G4 upgraded systems will perform acceptably with Windows ME and 2000.

Sys. 7 Today

OK. Here is the next edition of Connectix Virtual PC, version 3.0. It's updates the components to use Virtual PC 3.0, added support of Windows ME, 2000 compatibility, some nasty bugs fixed, added G3 and G4 support, and more.

You can use this serial number (not tested): 0002-0360-001

Marc Hoffman's Review:

VPC30_UPGCD.ZIP: Virtual PC 3.0 Upgrade CD-ROM ".toast" image compressed with zip. It does not include a hard disk file, you need a valid copy of Virtual PC 1.x or 2.x. You can make the hard disk image and install or upgrade to Windows 95/98/NT/2000/ME if you want and for full functionality, install the additions below. You can also install the OS/2 Warp, Red Hat Linux, Windows 3.1, and more operating systems without additions.
VPC302_W2000CD.ZIP: Virtual PC 3.0.2 CD-ROM ".toast" image with Windows 2000 Professional hard disk image, compressed with zip. (Note that installer refuses to install because of disk error. If you want to install, I will provide the installer only later)
VPC303_W98CD.ZIP: Virtual PC 3.0.3 CD-ROM ".toast" image with Windows 98 Second Edition hard disk image, compressed with zip.

Boot Floppy Images

Installing and configuring Windows is usually a tedious and frustrating process. I've tried to make it easy by including various Windows boot floppy images in Macintosh DiskCopy format. You can simply drag these onto the Virtual PC "eject floppy" button, and Virtual PC will use (and boot from) them.

Also required, for maximum performance, are the Virtual PC "Additions" that provide full functionality of networking, drag and drop file sharing, faster video, etc. These are not required if you are using the pre-installed copy of Windows that came with your copy of Virtual PC.

Okay, this is unrelated to the software (i tried it, it works great Smile ), but what is the software that gives you the windows like task bar?

Yes, because this screenshot is not mine. SheepShaver fails a lot to run Virtual PC 3.0 because it requires the MMU (memory management unit), which all of the Macintosh emulators does not have it except the SoftMac, which is 68K emulator, it has the MMU and it cannot run Virtual PC because this software is for PowerPC computers only.

According to the screenshot, the virtual machine runs Windows 2000 beta 3 with the Basilisk II running on the Virtual PC.
