A relational database application, FileMaker Pro 4.0 was Claris Corp's final major software release, only a few months before the company was dissolved and its assets split between the new Apple company "FileMaker Inc" and Apple itself. Version 4.0 now offered a much more integrated database to web publishing side with built-in CGI and web server. Previously this was handled by 3rd party software such as "Lasso". FileMaker Pro 4 databases are mostly compatible with previous version 3 databases and the .fp3 filename suffix used in Windows remained the same.
FileMaker Pro 4.0 also integrates with Claris Home Page 3.0: the former provides a database and the latter web page designing for web published FileMaker Pro databases, all very swish. I found this tutorial which makes it all easy to follow. — creatingWebSurvey.pdf
- Top DL: FileMaker Pro 4 installer CD for Macintosh
- 2nd DL: FileMaker Pro 4.0 installer CD - Mac/Win hybrid installer set.
- Note: Competitive Trade-Up and Upgrade CD, requiring previous software install (listed in zipped DL).
- MD5 checksum & filename: 8b8b4149c1011f2e16d30e5f330dfece *FMPro4-hybrid.zip
- 3rd DL: FileMaker Pro 4 Binder (Mac)
- 4th DL: FileMaker Pro 4 Binder 4.0v3 update (Mac)
- 5th DL: FileMaker Pro 4 Binder (Windows)
- 6th DL: FileMaker Pro 4 Binder 4.0v2 update (Windows)
- 7th DL: FileMaker Pro 4 Binder 4.0v4 update (Windows)
- The Binder is used to "compile" database document files into standalone databases that do not require the user to have a copy of FileMaker Pro application itself. The main limitation of standalone databases is that they are single user only (they cannot be used by more than one person at a time). The Binder creates a cut-down version of FileMaker Pro, without the layout / design or network sharing features, which is "bound" by a binding key to a set of database document files (using the Type / Creator codes on Mac and the filename extension on Windows), but the files are also still usable in normal FileMaker Pro as well. The Mac Binder is used to create a Mac OS 7-9 standalone application. The Windows Binder is used to make a Windows standalone application - the Binder must be run under Windows (not sure of the full requirements, but it works under Windows 95 in VirtualPC and standalone databases work up to at least Windows 8, probably Windows 10 too). You cannot create the Windows standalone application under Mac OS nor vice versa.
- 8th DL: FileMaker Pro 4 Password Viewer Gold 2.0
- This can be used to extract the master password from protected FileMaker Pro 4 database documents (as long as that password is normal text characters). Handy if you've forgotten the password to an old database file.
- 9th DL: FileMaker Pro 5->4 Reverter
- This small application will attempt to convert a FileMaker Pro 5 database document into a file that can be opened by FileMaker Pro 4. Obviously any newer FileMaker 5 features cannot be converted, but otherwise it does a reasonably good job.

Compatibility
Architecture: 68k PPC x86 (Windows)
Separate & FAT installers for 68k & PPC Macintosh - you can install for both CPU types at same time if wished (important for 68k Macs with PPC upgrade cards). This software runs under SSW 7.1 to 9.2.2 - It also runs very well under "Classic" on PPC OS X up to 10.4.11
Windows installers also (2nd DL, hybrid Mac/Win CD)
Runs great on Basilisk II & SheepShaver
Minimum System Requirements:
SSW 7.1 for Macintosh, SSW 7.1.2 for PPC Macintosh
8 MB RAM for PPC Macintosh or 68k Macintosh with Web Companion enabled.
4 MB RAM for 68k Macintosh without Web Companion enabled.
TCP/IP, AppleTalk or IPX/SPX Network enabled for sharing FileMaker Pro databases over a network.
M 68020 CPU or newer
I found this (Top DL) on a CD-ROM given to me by a publishing house (now defunct) in the UK. I have been trying different apps to see what they do and this is one such app. It seems to be similar to MS Access, a database app that the user can customise and design their own user interface. It says it can link via the internet too. I've had a quick look through and it seems to be "the full monty", impressive. I've added the serial to the "read me" file.
Comments
There will be, but also very difficult to track down. These will have to be updated manually on a case by case basis, if and when discovered.
Yes, the Edit link now works on this page for me - thanks. I don't know if there are any other pages with the same problem, but could be impossible to track them down until someone tries to edit them.
I know exactly why this message pops up, and a change has been applied to the page - try editing now
I just tried clicking the Edit link and got the same "Access Denied" error message. (I don't have anything to edit, I was just seeing if it was working for someone else.)
I also tried the Edit link on the new "FileMaker Pro 4.0 Developer Edition" page Duality created and it does work properly there ... must be something peculiar to this page and maybe some others, but not all pages.
Regrettably, the edit page is still being grouchy to me, still seeing "Access Denied".
I'll create a new entry. It was marketed as a new SKU at the time and it was a post-FileMaker Inc. product, so it probably makes sense to distinguish between this release, and the 4.1 release.
@Duality:
This shouldn't be happening... Try it again and if it still fails, then maybe a new page for those items would be best.
I seem to be getting an "Access Denied" error when I try to edit this page.
I have two images of the Developer Edition of FM Pro 4 to share. Any chance we could get these on this page, somehow, or should I create a new one?
The cnet article may be dated 2009, but it looks to me like they have included a FileMaker Inc press release from 10 years earlier. FileMaker Inc was pushing Pro version 10 out of the door in 2009, no way would they be supporting old Claris products by that stage...
The update mentioned is version 4.0v2. Its the updater from 4.0v1 to 4.0v2, to keep in line with the bugfixes already included in 4.1, not an upgrade to 4.1.
This was at a transitional period of moving from Claris to FileMaker Inc. They still had to support version 4.0 for a while.
Where I was working at the time bought their software at cheaper "educational" prices direct from a Apple via an Authorised Reseller. but I'm not certain which version it would have been ... I do have 4.1v3 installed though (and ocassionally still used thanks to having the Binder for it).
According to this cnet.com page from September 2009 there was a free update from version 4 to 4.1 "coming", but whether that qualified for the v3 update or not is another question.
This would be a very rare item, as I don't think that too many copies of 4.1 ever sold. - 4.1 was probably a quick'n'dirty re-branded version 4.0, emanating from Claris Corp's demise once FileMaker Pro was handed over into FileMaker Inc's control. - Then version 5.0 was released approx. 3 months after 4.1
It works now! Thank you!
Being on a dial-up connection, I can't check them all, but I checked a random couple of the small ones and they work okay via the "Main" link. There is a note in the forums about the "Mirror" link may take a bit longer to replicate through.
Something went wrong with the latest updates, the new additions do not show up. Can check it again, please?
Oops! I should have re-read the ReadMe before I uploaded it.
I did have the 4.1 installer at one time, but it must be one of the big disc images I threw out a few years ago when I was running out of hard disk space because I can't find it now (I probably wouldn't have been able to upload it on my slow connection anyway).
A note about the 4.1v3 Updater (since removed from above), from it's enclosed "Read Me"...
We need to get a copy of FileMaker Pro version 4.1 now, before this update can be applied
FileMaker Pro (even the more complicated later version) is MASSIVELY easier to use than horrible MS Access.
One thing to be aware of is that when using Classic under Mac OS X 10.2 there is an annoying bug where dragging any object on a layout will duplicate that object, instead of moving it. This bug isn't there when using Classic under OS X 10.1 or (apparently) OS X 10.3.
