Last Classic Mac Canvas. When you install the updates take care that you save the installer log from your desktop to another place because every installer overwrites the old installer log. The good thing with Canvas, however, is that it installs nothing into the system folder except preferences and an applications support folder (if I recall it correctly).
System Requirements:
• PowerPC processor (G3 or better recommended)
• System 9.0.4 or Mac OS X
• 64 MB RAM for OS 9.1, 128 for OS X
• 100 MB free hard disk space
• 16-bit color or higher
• 800 x 600 or higher screen resolution
See Also: Canvas 2.x, Canvas 3.0.x, Canvas 3.5.x, Canvas 5.0.x, Canvas 6.0.1, Canvas 7.0.2, Canvas 9.0.4, Canvas X
CompatibilityRequires Mac OS 9.0.4 or better, or Mac OS X up to, including 10.4.11 (PPC). Will run on SheepShaver if running Mac OS 9.0.4. Will not run on an earlier classic mac OS.
My SheepShaver running 9.0.4 emulates a PM 9600/200. - Canvas 8 runs OK on this but does feel slightly sluggish. Usable tho'.

Is there any way to purchase a serial number for this version?
@MTT:
Yes, according to a forum thread that I cannot find anymore, someone in the organization felt generous enough to do the unofficial build, fixing most of the outstanding bugs at that time.
W00F! Many thanks for that, mrdav. Page purport's to be an "unofficial" update release. Neato'.
FYI: The final version of Canvas was Canvas X build 926 which was a substantial bug fix of Canvas X made as a parting gift to users of this discontinued product by ACD Systems. The link is
https://acdsystems.desk.com/customer/portal/articles/553263-install-canv...
Of course you need a Canvas X serial number to run this...
Works a treat in OS X 10.6.8
The fifth DL above "canvas5_batchi_o_folder.sit" (17.66 KB) appears to be for Canvas version 5 only and not for this version of Canvas.
Also, the incremental update files are not required if updating the main installed file. Just the main (36.62 MB) installer & the final "canvas-806updater.sit" (9.59 MB) archive is necessary for a full update to Canvas 8.0.6.
fully expecting to encounter a glitchy install in SheepSaver, imagine my unfettered joy when it downloaded & installed & opened & edited & saved & printed w/out issue in Snow Leopard (MacBook Pro, i7, 8GB ram, 10.6.5) - happy birthday to me
@xy:
It doesn't. But then again, it doesn't seem to matter. That truncated serial appears to work anyway (just tried it). Perhaps I'm just a sucker for legit activation keys, re: link below
Anyway, the main installer is in good shape and now archived at Mac Garden, so thats the main thing. Thanks.
If I recall it correctly I have tested the included serial for Canvas 8 (not for Canvas 7) some months ago. It worked fine. I think the application offers the first digits you mentioned by itself.
Thanks for replacement of the broken updaters and the page update.
@xy:
I've replaced those two files. I also removed the .hqx as this has now become redundant. Thanks very much for the new version 8 installer, it downloads and extracts perfectly. I also added a little more info on its compatibility with Mac 9 and X.
The accompanying serial looks like it will be no good, but as yet untested by me (perhaps someone can confirm?). All Canvas vers. 8 serials that I've seen begin M181* (includes the "*" and then is followed by 12 alphanumerical characters), Canvas 8 for Windows serials begin W181*............
However - I was searching for some Canvas 8 info today and came across an ADC form to request a serial for Canvas 8 Professional Edition.
I recall 3 or more years ago ADC was giving free copies of version 8 away in some of the PC mags as a promo.
It appears that the Free & Legal Serial activation page is still alive. Well, you could've bowled me over with a feather.How much longer it will remain active I can't say, so... Cheers.
[Edit] Good things don't last forever. Activation page now long gone (2015:05:17).
Thanks very much Mike Garden.
I have now also uploaded the same 8.0 installer as sit-archive. This is not the original rawsound sit-archive as previously but a new archive stuffed by me. sit makes the archive 13 MB smaller than hqx. The content of both archives is IDENTICAL. So, THERE IS NO NEED TO DOWNLOAD BOTH. Balrog, or whoever, feel free to delete the hqx-archive or to make even smaller archives. Both of my archives where made with DropStuff 7.0.3 in the mode "better compression" and otherwise default settings.
Yes, of course, it would be very nice to replace the broken 8.0.4 and 8.0.6 updaters.
@xy: [a heads-up]
I did the ol' edit trick on this page and DL'd your "canvastm_8_0.hqx" - despite the "Unavailable" notice, it is there. Get it while you can folks cause its Gold
Yes it is fine and usable - a very good copy. I also Stuffed your .hqx and it compressed down to 38.2 MBs, which may just be acceptable for the MG if you were to stuff the .hqx and put it back up.
I used Stuffit Lite 3.6
so if you were to use DropStuff 5.5 or Deluxe 5.5 or newer this may result in even better compression.
Anyway. Great news. Probably no need for you to re-do the .hqx, just stuff it and repost. I can still put up the unbroken updaters if you want.
@xy:
You can, after making the .hqx - Stuff or Zip the .hqx file. This is usually safe to do and can result in making a much smaller archive. This may help if the .hqx is too large for uploading and also may help in you not having to futz around with this file too much more.
Also, if it helps. I already have a working copy of Canvas 8 and the updates (which are in good shape) I was thinking about putting them up too, not too long before I saw that you already had. So I decided not to and have been hoping that your files would come good... If it doesn't work out I'll put them up then. I have a personal code for the main vers 8 file so don't want to part with that, but it shouldn't be too hard to locate a working code for anyone else to unlock and install it.
Lets see how your .hqx pans out 1st. I can still put up the updaters if need be, only updaters 1.0.4 and 1.0.6 need to be replaced here.
xy:
Yes, Maedi prevents downloads beyond 40MB because of bandwidth costs. Formerly 200MB in August 2009, then 60MB in late 2009, and now 40MB in 2010.
The hqx-archive of the 8.0 installer is too big. I will make a smaller archive.
Thanks for testing. I will make a new 8.0 archive, this time hqx.
Something might be wrong with the rawsound archives. My original rawsound 8.0.4 and 8.0.6 updaters are still bad so I can't exchange them. I do not know whether it is possible to fix the those updater archives. I hope the 7.0 and 7.02 archives stay good. This is all very weird. I never had this before.
@xy:
I've had time to test all of your Canvas uploads and the fresh re-uploads. My current findings are:
I also tested both of the Canvas 7 files that you uploaded. Both of those are good. A-OK.
Thanks for all the effort xy. There's so much that can go awry in the process of packaging and uploading. I know this from experience.
I have reuploaded Canvas 8.0 and all Canvas updaters. Canvas 8.0 archive should be okay now. Also the 8.0.5 updater should be okay. However, 8.0.4 and 8.0.6 updaters are not okay. Also the Canvas 5 batch is not okay. My original files of 8.0.4, 8.0.6 and the batch I some months ago downloaded from rawsound.com are not okay. When I recall it correctly, they were okay when I downloaded them. I opened them once and stored them on a pretty new HFS+ stick. I have not touched them since. What happened in the meantime I do not know. Maybe someone has fresh archives of these updaters.
If the here anew uploaded 8.0 archive and the 8.0.5 are still not okay, please tell me. I then will make fresh hqx-archives of the now unarchived installers I have left.
@xy:
Hi xy. I haven't DL'd the updates as yet so can't say. But I did DL Freehand (muchas gracias) and it is A-OK. Perhaps it is as you say it may have been the dragging of the S-Text doc onto Stuffit that broke it - you could try extracting the (original) Canvas8.sit that you uploaded yourself, to check if its OK at your end. i.e; it could've been a glitch in the actual uploading of the file... It may need to be re-done. But either way it would be good if you could up it again.
Is the problem with the 8.0-sit.archive only or also with the updates? I will upload the main 8.0.sit-archive again. The problem may be because I, with Stuffit Deluxe 7, added a SimpleText File with important information. I just dragged the file into the Stuffit window. This may have caused the extracting problems. The original sit-archive I downloaded from rawsond.com is okay. I will upload the original file without my SimpleText file. The SimpleText information you can also find via Google.
If all this does not help I will upload the whole thing again with FireFox or IE 8 on Windows XP. For this upload I used IE 7 on Windows XP.
@Protocol 7:
Thanks. Yes, same here, gets about halfway and errors out.
Same here. Gets about halfway and then errors out.
@xy:
The main Canvas8.sit DL may be corrupted
I've DL'd this twice now to check. The 1st time I DL'd to a Windows box then tried Stuffit 5.x on both Basilisk II and SheepShaver to extract. Both reported errors with the archive and failed to complete the extraction.
I then went and DL'd the main archive again to my QuickSilver box running OS X Tiger. I tried to extract the fresh DL with Stuffit Expander 8 and got much the same response:
Can anyone else confirm this?
Thanks guys!
@Vitoarc:
Why, the Mac Garden can be... if one puts their mind to it.
No need for mirrors. Just do the edit trick:
Click on edit this page, scroll down to Application file and you have the direct links.
Mirror mirror on the net
Who's the finest, where we get?
xy noted:
Interesting yes, but it has been this way ever since MG game/app DL's have had to get parsed by amazonaws.com
Boo & hiss, etc, etc, ad infinitum...
Thanks for posting Canvas 8 and updates - my fave Canvas is version 5.x (despite any of the critics humble opinions), at least this can be run on a PPC OS X too
[Edit] at least Canvas 8.x can be run on a PPC OS X too, I mean
Regarding the download issue. It is interesting, the manual is downloadable right away.
Canvas 8 with updaters and a Canvas 5 batch.
