BeHierarchic is a control panel, and one of the first Apple menu enhancers. After installing BeHierarchic, the Apple Menu can be configured to display submenus for each folder, folder alias, or server alias located in the Apple Menu Folder.
BeHierarchic 4.2 (FIRST DOWNLOAD LINK) supports any Macintosh model running MacOS 8.1 through Mac OS 9.2. It works also in Mac OS X's "Classic" environment.
BeHierarchic 3.1 (SECOND DOWNLOAD LINK) is for older Mac models running Mac OS 7.0 through Mac OS 8.0.
BeHierarchic 3.1 (THIRD DOWNLOAD LINK) is the same as Download #2, but has been modded to remove the Shareware popup after 20 days. (If you are Fabien Octave drop a note and I'll gladly send your fee! Modded by Crutch.)
BeHierachic 1.0.5 (FOURTH DOWNLOAD LINK) is a very early version of BeHierarchic. It was sourced from MacFormat's 1995 Christmas Edition CD. It was compressed using StuffIt 1.5.1 and encoded using BinHex 4.0.

@lilliputian: Thanks for the v1.0.5 addition.
I use only this version and on Mac OS's from before version 7.5, as I'm happy enough with the built in "Apple Menu Options" hierarchical menus that comes with later Mac OS's. This earlier v1.0.5 Control Panel is pretty much identical to how Apple's version works, so I hope Apple paid Fabien Octave some compensation for plagiarizing his creation.
and BeHierarchic should be installed after DefaultFolder
@MikeTomTom I have added v1.0.5 to the page!
I checked 'Ignore illegal instructions' in Sheepshaver's preferences and it helped. Now I'm waiting for unpleasant side effects :-/
I'm sorry to say that I got my version #'s wrong. The BeHierarchic that I use in Mac OS's before 7.5, is version 1.0.5 - I find its great in those early OS's but I wouldn't recommend it to you, as it is almost identical to the Apple Menu Options that we get with 7.5 and up. That is, there are no icons in the sub menus.
A copy for this early version is on the MacFormat 1995 Xmas edition (DL#11).
I have since looked into the versions 3.1 & 4.2 that we have on this page, and I agree, 3.1 works in SheepShaver running Mac OS 9.0.4, but the Control Panel will not open. Also version 4.2 will not run in SheepShaver running Mac OS 9.0.4 without crashing the emulator at start up.
I also started up with just a base set of Mac Extensions + BeHierarcic 4.2 - and it still crashed the emulator.
So it's not looking too promising for BeHierarchic on SheepShaver running Mac OS 9.0.4
I like it better than Apple Menu Options because it lets me have icons in the sub-menus.
I retried version 3.1.1 with Apple Menu Options disabled, and the truncated menu problem went away, but the BeHierarchic control panel won't open so I can't change its configuration settings.
I'm wondering if version 2.x would work. Do you remember off-hand which of those CD compilations have it?
It possibly conflicts with the built-in "Apple Menu Options" Control Panel. This CP serves pretty much the same function.
Personally, I don't use BeHiearchic after version 2 and not in Mac OS's from 7.5 and up, when the Apple Menu Options CP was introduced.
Version 2 isn't here (on this page, but it is included in some of the CD compilations here). I thought it to be more stable than 3.x, but it is somewhat redundant I think, after 7.5
I never went as far as trying version 4.x
Version 3.1 truncates the Apple Menu down to nothing but "About this Computer..."
Version 4.2 is crashing my Mac OS 9.0.4 SheepShaver VM with an illegal instruction error. I seem to remember there being some extensions/control panels that it conflicts with, but can't remember exactly what they were. I tried running a Conflict Test using Conflict Catcher 9, but it didn't help.
Does anyone recall what it conflicts with?
Just downloaded the French and Japanese version.
