The last version of BBEdit Lite. Since then, TextWrangler has replaced this program.

[History, from Wikipedia]

BBEdit is a proprietary text editor made by Bare Bones Software. It was originally developed for Macintosh System Software 6 and is now available for Mac OS X.

BBEdit is marketed under the trademark slogan, "It doesn't suck."

The first version of the BBEdit was created as a "bare bones" text editor to serve as a host application for a "proof of concept" to replace the TextEdit control used in Mac OS at the time, which could not read files larger than 32K. Taking advantage of its then-unusual plugin support, third party developers started writing plug-ins to insert HTML code in 1994 to make composing web pages easier. In fact, the developers at Bare Bones Software first learned of the existence of HTML through users inquiring about these plug-ins and later bought the rights to the plug-ins from their author and included them as part of the standard BBEdit package. The tools were included as an optional palette in version 4, and were progressively more integrated, gaining their own menu in version 5.0.

BBEdit was available at no charge upon its initial release in 1991, but was commercialized in May 1993 with the release of version 2.5.

At the same time, Bare Bones Software also made a less-featured version of BBEdit 2.5 called BBEdit Lite available at no cost. Bare Bones Software discontinued BBEdit Lite at version 6.1 and replaced it with TextWrangler, which was available for a fee, although significantly less than BBEdit. Several years later it too was released for free.

Yeah I guess it's a bug common to any Mozilla-based browser (probably Classilla too). That's why I went with the Macbinary replacement.

Out of habit now, I always right-click any hqx downloads.

@Protocol 7 - rightly noted:

There's a bug in Firefox where left-clicking a link to a hqx file destroys the header. It may be present in other browsers too.

Gobsmacked!!! Seamonkey too! - I was robbed of a whole 2MBs off that D/L. Thanks for pointing that bug out. Definitely one to watch out for.

Thanks for replacing the file here with that ".bin", too. It may be a safer bet as well.

I right-clicked the BBEdit link on the system7today page that xy posted and the downloaded file has a md5 of 545AF2AC43C99395DCB4400DB4F81EC0 and extracts fine.

However that doesn't seem to have been the issue here as the file in the post is definitely broken though. It's almost 2mb too small. So I've deleted it and replaced it with the .smi.bin file MikeTomTom pointed out.

@kerobaros:

This file doesn't seem to unpack properly on my Mac. StuffIt Expander 7.0.3, OS 8.6. Can anyone else confirm?

Confirmed. This file is not an archive in .HQX format it is fubar and does not work. Sadly, kataetheweirdo may have sourced this file from the same source that xy just posted a link to, as they are one in the same (broken) file of some kind, i.e; they both have the same md5 checksum:
4ad3413b6c42e886174b3c93572bf8cc *BBEdit_Lite_612.smi.hqx
4ad3413b6c42e886174b3c93572bf8cc *BBEdit_Lite_612.smi_.hqx

There are other sources for this version of BBEdit Lite 6.1.2 and there is a good working one on this page: http://utilnn.com/sw_classicmac/
Look for the file marked: "BBEdit_Lite_612.smi.bin 04-Mar-2003 08:40 4.5M" about 3rd from the top of the list.

There are also several other potentially useful Classic apps and utilities on this page, so even if reading this post and not wanting BBEdit Lite, you may want to view it anyway.

Perhaps this working BBEdit should replace the broken one archived here.
