Guides on emulating older applications

The Apple DVD Player is a full-featured, software only DVD player for Mac OS 9.1 and later. This version adds unified support for all Macintosh G3 and G4 models that shipped with AGP graphic display cards, including support for both the ATI and Nvidia graphics cards. It is not compatible with the DVD hardware in the Power Macintosh G3, PowerBook G3, and Power Mac G4 (PCI graphics) series computers. - Unless patched for use on unsupported hardware, then you can use this software on those Macintosh models and others.

  • Top DL: Apple DVD Player 2.7 - this includes the full install and/or updater for earlier versions.

  • 2nd DL: Patch for use in Unsupported Hardware. Applies to Apple DVD Player version 2.7 only.
Use TomeViewer to extract contents of the Tome file included with the 2.7 Player installer files.

  • 3rd DL: Patched Apple DVD Player 2.7 - ready to go - added here for those too uncertain about how to apply the patch themselves or how to use TomeViewer.

  • Manual: The "Read Me" SimpleText doc is included in with the 2.7 installer files. Added here in PDF format.
  • Compatibility
    Architecture: PPC

    For Mac OS 9.1+

It is possible to have this (patched version) working on Mac OS 8.6 (and perhaps earlier) if you replace the 8.6 Apple CD/DVD Driver, ISO9660 File Access, Foreign File Access & UDF Volume Access Extensions with newer copies from a Mac OS 9.1 installation. - I'm able to view DVD's on a beige G3 with a Rage Pro 128 PCI graphics card, the patched DVD Player, plus the CD/DVD driver extensions from Mac OS 9.1, now running OK on a Mac OS 8.6 system.

Hey, the patched version worked under the Mac mini G4! It was one of the only things that didn't work on the mini specifically, but I didn't know it was a more "general" issue!

Contrary to before, the player actually opens now (rather than quitting with an error). Now, to find and try some DVD. (Do VCDs AKA Video CDs also count?)

[Edit: And it works! Smile My Shaolin Soccer DVD is playing on the mini thanks to that patch. On the other hand, VCDs I tested didn't work, though maybe a different program can handle those.]

Perhaps it's because I upgraded the optical drive from the factory Apple unit.

@PowerMacZach: That would be the reason. Glad the patch worked for you too.

The patched version is a great piece of software for playing DVDs on unsupported hardware! I'm now able to watch DVDs on my Power Macintosh G3 (Blue & White). I'm not sure why the regular Apple DVD Player wouldn't work with my machine, despite having the decoder daughterboard on my video card. Perhaps it's because I upgraded the optical drive from the factory Apple unit.
