About the Macintosh Garden

The Macintosh Garden is an abandonware archive, dedicated in particular to supporting the Macintosh computer platform. A notable feature of Macintosh Garden is its emphasis on emulation, encouraging users to run historical software on modern systems.

Software featured on the Macintosh Garden has been discontinued by their publishers and is no longer commercially available. The Macintosh Garden aims to preserve these treasures for future generations, providing documentation and downloads of the original files.

With respect to copyrighted software: Non-qualifying software is removed if detected and upon request. If software is removed due to copyright, a link to the Publisher's purchase page is provided in it's place.

The website is primarily a wiki, allowing contributors to upload files and screenshots as well as edit descriptions and other details. Software is divided into Apps and Games and these are categorized by genre, year, author and publisher, etc.;

Originally founded in 2001. Throughout this time the site was hosted by "Home of the Underdogs" an earlier PC abandonware site. In late 2008, HOTU went bankrupt and the Macintosh Garden was without a home for a short period. The Macintosh Garden relaunched in 2009 in the form you now see it as it's own independent identity, and it plans to keep active for now and into the future. We hope that you like and enjoy it.

Netscape Navigator 3.0 (Standard Edition) is available for anyone interested.

@ Maedi: so you finally got the forum up an running. Nice going! However it says I'm not allowed to post new topics. Care to explain to the people?

by kataetheweirdo - 2009, May 17 - 5:06pm

to IIGS User: Sure thing.

Also, does anyone here have Raptor - Air Superiority Fighter? I checked everywhere I could and I can't find a working download.

Uploading an older version of Acrobat Reader would be a good idea, since the official Adobe site offers such an application for Mac OS X only. This site: http://main.system7today.com/software/acrobat4/acrobat4.html tells, Acrobat Reader 4 is PowerPC only, so either we could add Acrobat Reader 4.x for PowerPC plus Acrobat Reader 3.x for 68k Macintoshes, divided to separate entries. Or even version 3.x alone, which should run on PowerPC, too.

I still have to look on old CD ROMs whether these versions are handy on my CD ROM stuff, but if another person has these versions, please upload.

UPDATE:
Thanks for uploading Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.02 so fast... Smile

Would there happen to be a pdf viewer for Mac OS 7?

by Maedi (Disabled) - 2009, May 12 - 1:59am

@sshrugg

You can now add 'World Builder' or 'Hypercard' to the 'Engine' text field when editing a game. Hope that helps.

by sshrugg - 2009, May 11 - 2:03pm

I agree that a forum might be in order.

Also, has anybody in charge considered adding World Builder or Hypercard categories? I know that it can be extremely hard to find world builder games online, and I found quite a few here, including:

Drakmyth Castle
Enchanted Scepters
Joshua's Worlds
Lost Crystal
Schmoozer
Space Adventure
Star Trek Game
Swamp Witch

I think I have some more around here somewhere that I can donate...

Hey watchsmart, no worries. I'm beginning to think that we'll need a forum! I'm looking into the options now...

Heres a review link: http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/iceandfire/index.html

@Maedi: I changed the IMG to a Stuffed one (.sit) but first the file was named 'Entomorph_PlagueoftheDark.img' when I uploaded it. When downloading it later, to check if it mounted properly, the name on the file had changed to 'Entomorph_PlagueoftheDark.img_0' and couldn´t be mounted. Since I hadn´t followed the advice to '.sit' anything '.img' I did and reuploaded. This time the downloaded file unstuffed and mounted ok.

by Maedi (Disabled) - 2009, May 8 - 2:58pm

@SwedeBear

The system will automatically add _'s to file extensions for security reasons, It's so people can't upload an app and execute it on the server I believe. Though we might be able to find a solution. Can you point me to the game in question? I'm not sure about the 0...

by SwedeBear - 2009, May 8 - 1:05pm

@maedi: Hi, been struggling to get a good copy up but when dl the file (img) gets a underscore and a zero added. I had adjusted the img-name before upload from containing a space to a underscore a-la-ftp, so it made me wonder if the server acts up on some signs in the filenames?

@MacWise: then I can un-cross my fingers!

@SwedeBear: Great! It works! Thanks for everything.

by SwedeBear - 2009, May 8 - 9:16am

@MacWise: heh, didn´t realize there was a floppy version. I only got the CD-ROM version so that´s up now. With the patch. I hope…

MacWise's picture
by MacWise - 2009, May 8 - 5:20am

@SwedeBear: Thanks for taking care of the issue so rapidly. However the patched application asks for the CD. Do you have it, the CD? Can you turn it into an image and upload it?

by SwedeBear - 2009, May 7 - 8:46pm

@MacWise: ehrm, I think I must have made a preview and rolled back one step to many not saving all changes, I think.
Anyhow; now the right package is up, unstuffs successfully w Stuffit Expander 5.5. Smile

I thought the news about 3D Realms shutting down was just a rumor--I visited their site just a few days ago--but now I can't connect to 3drealms.com. What a shame! Despite the endless soap opera behind Duke Nukem Forever, I always liked their titles and looked forward for more--Duke Nukem or not. Now it seems it will be simply not. Sad

Hey SwedeBear, you updated the Darkseed page with the message, "Game archive now includes Patch 1.1 with instructions. The patch is said to cure the 'Error 25´-syndrome". When I downloaded it, I got the same old package with 5 disk images that install version 1.0. What's up with that?

Thats smallish, perfect size really.. Smile Yeah I got allot of games waiting to be uploaded as well. Im also looking forward to other peoples contributions.

Thanks in advance.

by SwedeBear - 2009, May 7 - 9:13am

mmmmh; 382.2MB to be precise. Sad Well, got a heap of CD-ROM games, mostly adventure, waiting to be upped here. Closest to todays limit is 'Around the World in 80 Days' which runs up to 62 MB.
Patience, and crossed fingers, is the word(s). Wink

Hey mate that's rad! Before you upload, make sure its under the 60mb limit. If its well over (which im sure), just wait for the server admin to work stuff out with the upload limit.

Cheers.

by SwedeBear - 2009, May 7 - 8:44am

Yep, both the PC/DOS and Mac. I´m just about to make a NDIF-copy under Tiger to see what result I get. If no good I´ll run a Disk Copy under SS to get a proper resultate. In short I´ve no idea how big this is going to be at th' mo'.

Anyone have Return to Zork? I know this is a really hard find, and most likely very rare. This was the Zork game I used to play as a kid.

Good luck.

I see some of these games have been uploaded to the server, they're all freeware and can be all found on this page: http://www.barfquestion.com/eb_site/eb_index.html

Check em out, some of them are actually quite interesting. I suggest office building gun play and gardyloo golf as my personal faves. Smile

Cheers.

@ Max Bruschi: Maedi doesn't want splitted files. He's working on increasing the upload limit. We'll just have to wait.

I have flight unlimited but is 119 Mb , any chance to send without split in two parts?
Thanks Max

@j_damage•69

Great stuff. I'll work on upping the limit, and then you can upload a few.

> "Hi all, how to handle updates/patches? Should I put a link in a comment on the game´s page or should I put up a completely new page just for the update/patch?"

I would think it could be merged into the current downloadable file and just re-uploaded to the current entry. Don't want to have a large amount of game entries for the same game just to offer patches.

Better no links, as links are going to be dead later...

Edit: Sorry SwBear, I planned to answer to this your post, but unfortunately I edited it some way.

The problem occurs if you move the game over to another hard disk location. Then it will ask again. Our version of Crystal Crazy includes a verified game installation which will not ask for Disk 1. Run it from the image only to prevent that askin'.

I moved two more games from the repository into the new server, Deliverance and Darkseed, and uploaded another one that was long overdue on Mac Garden, Descent (with manual).

@ VW: Thexder was available on the old site and is already available in here (link). It's a shame there's no color version--for the Mac, that is.

Currently on my wanted list: Hoyle Board Games 3. Upload!

I liked the old site because the theme was so original. This site looks like every other site

OMG!!! HOTUD-Mac is finally back! The world had turned into a shitty place with you gone!

I DLed almost all of the files on the old Mac-HOTUD when I started realizing it was breaking and in trouble... had to go to the rincewind FTP (or something) eventually and just DL most of the weird filenames without knowing what they were!)

I'm pretty busy these days but the old Mac stuff is just SO NICE to unwind with!
Going to upload THEXDER soon (wasn't available on the old HOTUD)

So glad you're back! I'm currently fixing up a 540c for my brother's kids... anyone figure out
how to get Crystal Crazy working yet? I have the files but not the disk images... it needs Disk1!

O rly, well at least I know its a sound bug now, not my computer playing up. When the game first came out I always wanted to figure out what triggered it. Shame the music is pretty cool for this game.

MacWise's picture
by MacWise - 2009, April 30 - 6:02pm

@ j_damage•69: That's a sound problem. I don't remember which setting I had to turn off--the background music, I believe--to make it go away. A better solution is to avoid big falls altogether Wink

Be careful when falling off any high ledges in the hexen games, it can cause the computer to crash! :/

MacWise's picture
by MacWise - 2009, April 30 - 5:54pm

@ j_damage•69: thanks for the comments. Seems that day will come sooner than expected.

@ Maedi: So we are going to have a forum AND we will be able to upload CD images? :'-) There should be more webmasters like you. Seriously.

@ phreakindee: I forgot to mention that I already tried to apply the patch, but it doesn't goes through. The message window says, "An error prevented the update from completing. Resource has been modified. (dont 1000)." I thought that meant the game came already patched. Does it runs on your machine?

UPDATE: I decompressed the file with StuffIt Expander 5.5 (which I donwloaded from this site) and everything's fine. The first time around I decompressed it with version 7.0.3, so it was an incompatibility problem.

@MacWise:

Regarding Duke Nukem 3D Atomic: You must install the 1.2 [k] patch, which is included, in order to play the game once unpacked, otherwise it will ask for the CD.

by Maedi (Disabled) - 2009, April 29 - 1:12pm

Okay, I see we won't be able to escape the need for a forum. I might cook one up, but first on the list will be the 60MB upload limit. Give me a few days on this, and then you will be able to upload larger files.

@MacWise

Welcome, I wouldn't want you to have to split up a file. Looking forward to your future contributions.

by j_damage (not verified) - 2009, April 29 - 6:42am

MacWise, welcome! Thanks for the hexen: death kings expansion... I have been going through my cds and whatever else Ive collected over the years, uploaded a fair bit already. Yeah shame about the 60mb limit eh? There is soo much great stuff out there.

One day, everything will be different... Wink

by MacWise - 2009, April 29 - 6:31am

@ j_damage•69: that would be a yes!

MacWise's picture
by MacWise - 2009, April 29 - 9:36am

Let me introduce myself. The name's MacWise and I'm glad this site is back from the dead. Hope it stays that way.

I moved the Hexen expansion pack Deathkings of the Dark Citadel from the old repository to this server. Enjoy.

I downloaded Duke Nukem 3D, but when I double-clicked on it, I got a message asking for the CD. The file in question is not a CD image, so I'm not sure what to do. Any ideas?

I also want to know if there is a way to work around the 60 MB upload limit, such as splitting a large file into chunks? Most of my stuff won't fit into a 60 MB file.

And finally, yeah, this place needs a forum.

j_damage•69's picture
by j_damage•69 - 2009, April 29 - 5:58am

Would you like me to upload the CD version of Quake?

Cheers!

by Director (not verified) - 2009, April 28 - 2:58pm

If anyone has a classic version of Final Draft or another screenwriting app for Mac OS 7.x, please please upload! There are absolutely no screenwriting applications for classic Macs anywhere - not even for sale.

by Mac Football (not verified) - 2009, April 28 - 2:17am

So very glad to see this site back up and running. It is an essential link for any Mac User. I was wondering if someone with be kind enough to upload the classic NFL Challenge for Mac? Many thanks to everyone for sharing their old software.

by Maedi (Disabled) - 2009, April 26 - 9:13am

@matheweis

Thanks so much! You can actually do this already, just hold down Command to select multiple categories.
